The New Mayor Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his administration.
A Historic Leader
The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:
- Free childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
